Hän työskenteli sairaanhoitajaksi valmistuttuaan Pariisin amerikkalaisessa sairaalassa ja toisen maailmansodan aikana Punaisen Ristin palveluksessa Etelä-Ranskan sotilasleireillä. Lydia Gysi aloitti vuonna 1942 teologian ja myöhemmin filosofian opinnot Baselin yliopistossa, jossa väitteli tohtoriksi vuonna 1950 aiheenaan platonismi ja kartesiolaisuus &#039;&#039;&#039;Ralph Cudworthin&#039;&#039;&#039; filosofiassa. Lydian ajattelun kehitykselle ratkaisevaa oli hänen yhteistyönsä filosofi Hermann Gaussin kanssa. Hänen myöhempi työtoverinsa ja seuraajansa (silloinen) Sisar Tekla on kuvannut Lydian ja Gaussin tapaamista hengellisen isän ja opetuslapsen kohtaamiseksi. Gauss oli platonisti, jonka myötävaikutuksella ja ohjauksessa Lydia keskittyi väitöskirjassaan Cambridgen platonisteihin – erityisesti Ralph Cudworthiin. Väitöskirjansa vuoksi hän päätyi Englantiin, sillä tarvittavat dokumentit olivat saatavilla ainoastaan British Museumissa.<br /> <br /> Väitöskirjan valmistuttua ajatus aktiivisesta luostarielämästä tuntui Lydiasta oikeammalta vaihtoehdolta kuin akateeminen ura. Englannissa ei kuitenkaan tuolloin ollut ortodoksista naisluostaria. Isä Anthony (sittemmin Surozin metropoliitta) löysi ratkaisun. Vuonna 1951 Lydia siirtyi West Mallingissa sijaitsevaan anglikaaniseen benediktiiniläisyhteisöön. Seitsemän vuotta myöhemmin piispa Anthony vihki sisar Lydian äiti Mariaksi . Nyt hän oli luostarilupauksen antanut Venäjän kirkon alaisuuteen kuuluva ortodoksinen nunna. Vastoin alkuperäistä aikomustaan äiti Maria päätyi jäämään neljäksitoista vuodeksi benediktiiniläisluostariin. Seuraavat kymmenen vuotta kuluivat hänen perustamassaan Englannin ensimmäisessä ortodoksisessa naisluostarissa Filgravessa, joka hyväksyttiin vuonna 1971 Ekumeeniseen patriarkaattiin. Samalla äiti Marialle annettiin igumenian arvo. Vuonna 1975 tämä Neitsyt Marian kuolonuneen nukkumisen luostari muutti Pohjois-Yorkshireen Normanbyn nummille Whitbyyn.<br /> <br /> Jo toimiessaan benediktiiniläisluostarissa äiti Maria teki monenlaisia kirjallisia töitä: tekstien valintaa, tekstikriittistä tutkimusta, käännöksiä saksan kielelle. Sama aktiivinen ote säilyi hänen omassa luostarissaan. Sisaret kirjoittivat ja käänsivät kirjoja, järjestivät niitä painettaviksi ja myyntiin. Tavoitteena ei ollut teoreettinen teologinen tutkimus vaan ortodoksiseen elämään ja ajatteluun perehdyttävä kirjoittaminen. Luostariyhteisön päämäärä ja tarkoitus oli elää erämaaisien hengessä, hiljaisuuden ja sisäisen näkemisen tiellä. Kontemplaatio – sisäisen katselun elämä oli äiti Marian mielestä kaikkein lähimpänä myös filosofin elämää. Oleellista oli ”mutkikkaiden ulkoisten muotojen puuttuminen ja tulosvastuullisen hurskauden ilkkuminen”(Kirkas pimeys. Kirjeitä.,s.123).<br /> Platonismi<br /> <br /> Äiti Maria puhuu filosofisesta tietoisuudesta: filosofia valmistaa meitä kuolemaa varten. Hänen mukaansa filosofia sen enempää kuin uskokaan ei ole ideologia. Molemmat on elettävä maailmassa. Teoksessa Kirkas pimeys (KP, s.61) ilmenee hänen lähtökohtansa. ”Platonismista löydämme eletyn filosofian tien, ja juuri siitä huomaamme, miten tuo filosofia on sukua ortodoksisen uskon katsantokannalle: olettamusten parissa työskenteleminen, valmius aloittaa aina alusta, niin kuin mekin katuvaisina teemme: nöyrä mieli, joka ymmärtää sen, mitä se ei voi järjellä käsittää, ja joka ei yritäkään tähyillä Jumalan mieleen. Kun ilolla tunnustetaan ajattelun rajallisuus, mieli suostuu uskoon: tämä on varmin uskon perusta, sillä se on riisuttu kaikista harhakuvitelmista.” Platonismilla ja uskolla on sama tärkeä ominaisuus: ne eivät tee tietämättömyydestä numeroa vaan vaalivat Mysteeriä. Totuutta on lähestyttävä tyhjin käsin ja mielen askeettisessa kieltäymyksessä. Äiti Maria tuo esiin Platonin vaatimuksen ”kaksinkertaisen tietämättömyyden ” hylkäämisestä. Ihmismieleen on juurtunut pahuus, joka jatkuvasti houkuttaa meitä totuutta vastaan ja saa meidät luulemaan, että tiedämme sen, mitä emme tiedä. (Kätketty aarre, s.15)<br /> <br /> Kätketty aarre – teosta (KA) voi luonnehtia ortodoksisen apofaattisen teologian käytännön sovellutukseksi. Jumalan olemusta emme pysty inhimillisen kielemme avulla määrittelemään. Kuvaamiseen voi pyrkiä ainoastaan kieltoilmauksin – selittämällä, mitä Jumala ei ole. Äiti Marian teos perustuu oivallukseen, jonka hän oli yliopistovuosinaan saanut. Laatiessaan tutkielmaa aiheesta ”Paha Uudessa testamentissa” hän oli yhtäkkiä tajunnut, että ”evankeliumissa on järkeä” (KA, s.6). Ajattelu on järkeä Järjen sisällä. Mieli tavallaan pakotetaan ajattelemaan epäilyn hyökätessä sen kimppuun joka taholta. Jumala ei anna meille täydellistä tietoa. Filosofia ei juuri tämän vuoksi voi olla teoriaa vaan elämää, joka on elettävä mittavassa epäilyn aiheuttamassa hajaannuksessa. (KP, s.61). Äiti Marian ajattelu perustuu ankaraan yksinkertaisuuteen. Hän kieltäytyy kaikista ”uskonnäkyjen hepeneistä”. Kristillisen platonismin suurin saavutus on hänen mielestään suostuminen omaan rajoittuneisuuteen. Kaikenlaiselle kriittisyydelle on annettava tilaa. Tärkeää on omata ”kärsivällinen, dialektinen, monivoimainen mieli, joka ei koskaan väitä mitään lopulliseksi, eikä istu hetkellisten tulosten päällä ”. (KP, ss. 64-70)<br /> <br /> Filosofi-Houkka tai Kristitty-Houkka näkee, että todellinen yksinäisyys on todellista yhteyttä. Ainoa vastaus, jonka voi kenellekään antaa on ”rakastaa mielettömästi, järjettömästi, laskematta hintaa”, etsimättä muita vastauksia. Pahuutta ei tule sulkea ulkopuolelle vaan se on ymmärrettävä osaksi taivaan tämänhetkistä läsnäoloa.” Maan päällä emme koskaan kohtaa pahaa, jossa ei olisi jotain hyvää, ja tämän sekoituksen kärsimystä saamme maistaa, kun kannamme rakkaudessa pahaa”(KA, ss. 54-55). Paha (tai epäily) on suljettava sydämeen – se on muutettava hyväksi, riistettävä siltä valta, voima ja ’persoona’. Äiti Maria haluaa meidän kohtaavan kanssaihmisemme vapaasti, ilman esteitä ja suojamuureja, suoraan heidän ytimessään. Tämä taas edellyttää ’tuloksellisuudesta’ luopumista lähimmäisen rakastamisessa.
